Supporting Palliative Patients

Purpose
To provide companionship and support to patients and their families who are living with a life threatening illness. Volunteers are vital to this role.
Areas of Responsibility
Responsible to Co-Ordinator of Volunteers. All mentoring and training will be provided.
Tasks
An opportunity to listen to people and chat to them about the important things in life. Providing support to patients and families by being available to listen and/or talk about whatever is happening in their lives.
Objectives
The objectives of this role is to enable quality end of life care for patients and their families living with a life threatening illness. This is provided through volunteer support and companionship.
Special Requirements
A desire to want to help people through a difficult phase of their life. To enable people to have quality of life through providing companionship.
Role Qualifications
Particular skills would be the ability to "listen from the heart". Have compassion for people, be able to show empathy. If you like being with people then this may be just the position you are looking for.
Training/Supervision Provided
Full training is compulsory and will take approx. 25 hours to complete. The training will be provided free of charge according to Department of Human Standards and Palliative Care Victoria's Standards for volunteers.
